Mention has been made that all of my doors and/or gates have a similarity to them (excepting those I took while away on vacation). Well, that's true! All of the houses are located within about a 5 mile radius of my house. There is, of course some variation, but most of these houses are located in smaller communities or tracts that have design standards and the ever-present CC&R's (Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions) which set out what can and can't be done on your property. The CC&R's are designed to prevent "way-out" or otherwise non-conforming designs or finishes, supposedly to keep up property values. But they also create less individualized or colorful houses. So you end up with lots of earth tones or similarly muted colors in the exteriors, etc.
I will try to venture out to the area near my optometrist's office tomorrow, since I have to take my glasses back for some changes. I found and posted a pretty door there a week or so ago, and noticed some more individualized houses, since the area is older and not so strict in its architectural guidelines.
Meanwhile, today I drove through my old neighborhood (where we lived for 22 years before moving to our current house) looking for something different than in my current neighborhood. They're only 1 1/2 miles apart. I found this traditional door, part of a traditional Cape Cod style house, and I especially liked the barrel-vaulted ceiling over the entry way. I don't know if the beveled glass in the door panes shows through in the size I've uploaded, but the entrance as a whole just has a nice traditional, warm welcoming feel to it!

This is lovely. From the hanging lamo, to the white posts to the flowers. A lovely "traditional" shot.
I was beginning to believe that all houses in your area had them fancy gates and entries. This one is nice and traditional.
This entrance way is so welcoming. There is something to be said for tradition.
This one reminds me of a lot of houses I saw while in the US. I would walk around mesmerized at the different architecture and roof styles.
Nice find!!!
It looks as if it's saying, 'come on in!'
Very welcoming entrance. Non-assuming and very warm and friendly. I guess it could have something to do with being traditional, we feel a sense of knowing what to expect, I believe.
Carol - do people ever come out and ask you why you're taking pictures of their house? Of course, some of the homes are so large that they probably don't even notice you. I like to take the occasional photo - I've snapped from the car too, but that looks even more suspicious. :-). This looks more like the doors in the northeast where I live, but I love all your other more exotic doors.

For Sarah and the otheres of you who have asked...
I've only had one person come out, and she didn't come out because I was there. I was taking a picture of her gates while I was on vacation in the desert. Larry had parked the car, and I was out in the middle of the street for a head on shot of her fence and gates, when this lady drives out of a side area on a golf cart, stops, looks and asks, "What are you taking a picture of?" She asked nicely, not threateningly. I said, "I'm taking pictures of interesting and beautiful doors and gates, and I saw yours and loved it." She said, "Oh, thank you! Have a nice day."
I can see that people might be suspicious, so what I also try to do is keep a few pics of prior doors and gates on my CF card in case someone doesn't believe me, and I can just show them what I have.
Also, there are the home appraisers out with cameras, so maybe some people, if they see me, think I'm just taking pics for comparables.
I do like the traditionalness (is that even a word) of this door. Reminds me of home.
When I was walking through downtown Plymouth Michigan for the icefestival I thought of you. There were some really old historical type houses with some beautiful intersting doors. I kept thinking, oh this would fit in nicely with the gallery!
Even though you mention restrictions I'm amazed that so many people managed to create their personal touch in their entrance. I love the meditarenean style, it gives me a holidayfeeling.
I think managing the dark area around the door itself must have been hard without extra lights today.
Don't apologise for all those other doors. I personally think they are beautiful. I love earth tones, and they all look very impressive to me.
As you say, this one is quite, quite different. The pale white tones of this one work well. Very traditional.
I love your descriptions of the doors and gates and have learnt some good architectural words. I am not sure which style I like best as I think they are all lovely.
